Powers Horsemanship Classic

USHJA Zone VI Zandra Powers Horsemanship Championship

The Championship will be open to Amateur and Junior riders who are active members of the USEF/USHJA Zone VI. To be run in two sections: one at 3’6” in height and one at 3’ in height. Riders may enter only one section. Qualification period shall be from September 1 to August 31. Each section to be judged separately and have its own ribbons and trophies. Zone members may qualify for the Championship at shows held outside Zone VI, but they must be Zone VI members to be eligible to participate in the Championship. Both sections of the Championship will have a written test phase and a riding phase. The written phase will be held prior to the riding phase. Should an exhibitor not wish to participate in the written exam, they will receive no score for that phase. The written exam will be numerically scored and will be the starting score at the beginning of the riding phase. The score for the initial riding phase will be added to the score for the written phase for a numerical score. The top 50 % of the class by numerical score will be called back to test. The tests shall be at the judge’s discretion. If the judge requests a flat phase of the top 50 % first, they may also request further individual testing of the top four contestants. The courses for the Final shall meet the requirements of USEF Rule EQ111.10. A Liverpool or water is prohibited.

3’6” Section – Open to junior or amateur Zone VI riders who have placed 1st through 8th in any National Medal Class where the height of fences is 3’6” or higher. This includes, but is not limited to: USEF Hunt Seat Medal Class, ASPCA Horsemanship Class, Show Jumping Talent Search, W.I.S. Class, M and S Charles Owens Medal. The course shall consist of not less than eight obstacles 3’6” in height and must meet the requirements of USEF Rule EQ111.10. A Liverpool or water is prohibited. USEF tests 1-19. 3’ Section – Open to junior or amateur Zone VI riders who have won a first or second place in the following classes where the height of fences is 3’ to 3’3”: Medal Classes offered by any of the Zone VI Affiliate organizations – MHJA, INHJA or WHJA; or any nationally recognized Medal class at that height such as M and S Charles Owens, USEF Adult Equitation Class, etc… Amateur riders who qualify for this section may opt to ride in the 3’6” section if they so desire. The course shall consist of not less than 8 obstacles 3’ in height and must meet USEF Rule EQ111.10. A Liverpool or water is prohibited. USEF tests 1-14. See above for class procedure.

The written exam will include questions on horse shows, horse care, equipment and the horse, and riding techniques. Sources which may be used will include the USEF Rule Book, George Morris’ Hunt Seat Equitation, Paul Cronin’s Riding and Training the Sport Horse, Jane Marshall Dillon’s A School for Young Riders, and the Pony Club manuals.

Powers Championship Qualifier Class – Horse shows may offer this as a stand- alone class or as a replacement class in the event that any of the other stated qualifying classes do not fill. Class may be run in 2 sections, one at 3’ and one at 3’6”; or one section with both heights offered; or one section with just the 3’6” height offered. Two riders are required to fill the class. The course for either section shall meet the requirements of USEF Rule EQ 111.10. A Liverpool or water is prohibited. Judges must test the top 4 competitors. If sections are combined with both heights offered, judges may use only tests 1-14. Amateurs may enter the 3’6” section of the Powers Qualifier. Horse Shows may state in their prize list that if Medal classes do not fill, they will offer the Powers Qualifier.
