MINNESOTA HIGH SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION

Founded in 2001, the MHSEA is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation whose mission is to promote equestrian disciplines as a high school team sport. Our emphasis is on education, citizenship and recognition of athletes. The MHSEA program provides young riders the opportunity to pursue a sport they love, enjoy the camaraderie of other high school equestrian athletes and represent their high school in “team” competition.

MHSEA membership is open to youth in 8th grade through 12th grade at the time of registration. MHSEA members can participate in 7 different disciplines: Dressage, Eventing, Hunter/Jumper, Polo, Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat and Western. MHSEA members do not need to own a horse to participate or ride competitively to participate in the MHSEA.

In 2010, the MHSEA administered more than 30 high school clubs statewide. Each high school equestrian club has a volunteer Club Advisor who organizes monthly meetings, arranges club activities and communicates with parents, all under the oversight of the MHSEA. Clubs consist of members riding different disciplines. Members have the opportunity to learn about disciplines other than their own. If your school does not have a equestrian club, ask about the MHSEA Independent Club program. Membership requirements include registration with the MHSEA and the school, registration fees, volunteering, fundraising and attendance at club meetings.

Members ride and compete with a trainer or training barn at horse shows and competitions of their own choosing. MHSEA sponsors a Team Challenge each year for most of the disciplines, at a regularly scheduled show or competition. Show results for riders participating at the Team Challenge are collected to determine individual or team winners. The challenge offers an opportunity for members to represent their school at the show and to interact with equestrians riding at different barns.
